When you travel with your skates and costume, take the costume in your carryon bag. Some people ship the skates Fedex overnight if they don't have a direct flight. This is for domestic, international, take the skates with you and check them. I have had clients over the years get to the destination and the skates were not there, but at least if you have your costume, you can figure out what to do about the skates once there.

Take an existing freestyle dress that you are no longer competing with but still fits and have it changed into an ice dance dress for testing if you are working on your dances. Changing over the skirt is very easy and will save you time and money.

If you can't get to the rink because of bad weather, visualize a clean program over and over again for about 20 minutes. It has been shown that visualization exercise can maintain or even improve a program. This also works with individual elements such as a jump or spin. You do have to know how to visualize it correctly though.

You should try to practice with the same hair do that you want to wear for your competition.

Gem Tac is the best glue to use for beading your dresses. Remember that glue has water in it. Water evaporates. So don't be skimpy on the glue. You should see a little bit of it all around the stones once placed. It will dry clear and shrink in the process.

Ok, I am a little behind on my tips. At skating competition's, do not leave your costume alone in the locker room. Worse yet, do not throw it un protected over your skating bag. I have seen dresses stepped on and worse yet stolen.

During your training for your upcoming event, you should always pick a day the week of your event to do a run through with costume, makeup and hair. Of course, do your 6 minute warm up rehearsal too. Realize that you are doing this on freestyle ice with other people and they won't be there when you compete. Don't get upset if someone gets in your way.
